History: On July 8, 1889 in Richburg, Mississippi World Heavyweight Champion, John L. Sullivan met and defeated challenger Jake Kilrain in what would be the last defense of his title in bare knuckles. This fight was fought under the grueling heat and scorching sun typical of summer in the south. The fight lasted 75 rounds before Kilrain was forced to submit. Presented here is an extremely rare supplement poster issued by New York Illustrated news commemorating this fight.
Full description: This is a special supplement to the New York Illustrated News dated July 20, 1889. This paper supplement has been mounted on board and pictures both fighters in a square off pose. The original folds are still evident. No paper loss. Slight fading. 21 1/2" x 29 12." Exceptionally rare poster from this fight, this only example we have seen.
