JOHNSON, JACK-JAMES JEFFRIES ADVERTISING LARGE FORMAT PHOTO (1910)

On July 4, 1910 Jack Johnson successfully defended his heavyweight title against Jim Jeffries, the former champion. Jeffries had retired undefeated champion after his last fight in 1904. Encouraged greatly by a racist public eager to get rid of Jack Johnson, Jeffries agreed to fight Johnson, but age and an almost six year lay-off, coupled with Johnson's great skill and youth proved to be too much. Jeffries was easily defeated in a one sided match. Presented here is an original, large format photograph depicting the end of the fight with Johnson being introduced to the crowd by Billy Jordan as referee Tex Rickard and Johnson second Kid Cotton look on. This was used as an advertisement for James E. Pepper Whiskey.
This is an original, large format photograph which is mounted on its original mount which identifies the people in photo and the fight. Bold, clear image. Mount has edge and corner wear. Photo has mild staining along top and next to Rickard. Not creased. 11" x 16" photo on mount of 15" x 20."
