Al Roth was born in New York on September 22, 1913. Roth lived in the Bronx during his boxing career, became a professional in 1931 and had 100 bouts before retiring in 1942. Only 5 feet 4 inches tall, he was a popular, scrappy performer who appeared regularly in Madison Square Garden and other arenas. His most notable fight took place Oct. 4, 1935, when he tried to win the title from Tony Canzoneri in the Garden. Canzoneri dominated the fight until late in the 12th round, when Roth staggered him with a right to the face. Roth continued his rally, but the champion withstood it and took the decision after 15 rounds. Roth stopped fighting after a loss to Beau Jack on August 14, 1941 with a final record of 47-30-13. Offered here is an original signed photograph of Al Roth.
