HISTORY: Merqui Sosa (born November 9, 1965 San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republican) is a former professional boxer that also works as a boxing trainer. Sosa competed professionally from 1987 to 2000, and during his career defeated Glen Johnson, Tyrone Frazier, Lenzie Morgan and Charles Williams. He lost to Roy Jones Jr. in 1996 in a match that was televised on HBO. He finished his career with a record of 34 wins, 9 losses, 2 draws with 27 knockouts. His bouts were televised on ESPN and SportsChannel. He was promoted by Top Rank. Sosa has two film credits on the IMDb database. [14]
Sosa defeated Segundo Mercado in his last boxing match. He held the NABF light heavyweight title twice and won the World Boxing Association Continental Americas middleweight title against Jose Quinones on February 2, 1990 at the Trump Castle in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He is a USA Boxing certified coach at the Richard Steele Boxing Club in North Las Vegas, Nevada. He trains amateur and professional boxers as well as those that want to reach their fitness goals. Sosa has been training fighters since 2016 and has spent much time living in Brooklyn but he currently resides in Las Vegas.
