James J. Braddock, The Cinderella Man, was born on February 11, 1909 in Omaha, Nebraska. He defeated Max Baer at Long Island City, NY on June 13, 1935 to win the World Heavyweight Title. He was an extreme underdog and earned his nickname with the win. He lost the title to Joe Louis in 1937. Presented here is an original wirephoto of James Braddock with Max Schmeling looking at one of Braddock's hands. Taken in New York the subject was the likely postponement of a match between the two due to an injury to Braddock's hand. Dated August 18, 1936. They never fought as the powers in boxing lured Braddock into a fight with Joe Louis.
