HISTORY: Muhammad Ali was born on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. He won the World Heavyweight Title from Sonny Liston on February 25, 1964. He announced his retirement in February of 1970 but was back in the ring later that October. He won the NABF Heavyweight Title On July 26, 1971 in a bout with Jimmy Ellis. He regained the World Heavyweight Title when he fought George Foreman in Zaire on October 30, 1974. He retired after losing to Trevor Berbick on December 11, 1981 with a final record of 56-5 with 37 KO's. Presented here is an original gym bag used by Cassius Clay while he was training as an amateur in Louisville, Kentucky under the eye of Joe Martin at the Columbia Street Gym.This bag was part of a group of items given to a friend and neighbor of the Clay family, Robert Brown, by Cassius Clay Sr. Other items included a mouthpiece in a Noxema jar, white training shoes and a jump rope. FULL DESCRIPTION: This is a reddish brown canvas gym bag. The base meausres 6" x 15 1/2" with a height of approximately 8 inches. Has two straps, one of which is torn from the bag. In ink on the upper portion adjacent to the zipper is printed "C.C." for Cassius Clay. The bag is well worn and faded, but still intact. Rare item right out of the house Cassius Clay lived in as an amateur fighter.
