FITZSIMMONS, ROBERT-JACK DEMPSEY "THE NONPAREIL" FULL TICKET (1891)

HISTORY: On January 14, 1891 at the Olympic Club in New Orleans world middleweight champion Jack Dempsey "The Nonpareil" defended his title against lanky Robert Fitzsimmons. Fighting in an American ring for only the fourth time, Fitzsimmons (150½), a terrific two-handed fighter with immense hitting power, ultimately destroyed Dempsey (147½) to take the title. As early as the seventh round Dempsey looked a beaten man after he was dropped by a body blow, and although he gamely fought back the writing was on the wall. Dropped three times in the tenth, twice more in the 11th and again in the 12th, Dempsey was now completely at the mercy of Fitzsimmons. With Dempsey all at sea in the 13th, two heavy lefts and rights saw the champion floored again before being sent to the boards to be counted out. The final blow was more of a push than a punch, but Dempsey was completely used up, having had his nose broken and taken a battering to head and body.
