HISTORY: On January 3, 1967 at Aichi Gymnasium in Nagoya City, Japan world bantamweight champion Fighting Harada defended his title against Jose Medel. Harada prevailed winning a unanimous 15 round decision. "Fighting Harada of Japan, wiping out the only KO defeat of his career, won a unanimous 15 round decision over Jose Medel of Mexico Tuesday night to retain his world bantamweight championship. The champ fought in shrewd and cautious rallies to win the vote of the referee and judges and the cheers of 10,000 fans in Alichi Prefectural Gymnasium. Both fighters were cut in the bruising, fast-paced battle but there were no knockdowns. Twice, in the 10th and 15th rounds, it looked as though the determined Mexican battler would stop Harada as he did in their 1964 bout in Tokyo. But this time it was an older Medel and a smarter Harada." -Pacific Stars and Stripes Medel was deducted one point in the 10th for thumbing a cut over Harada's left eye. Post fight comments-"This was my toughest fight in all my four title bouts so far." -Fighting Harada "Medel was good tonight but Harada was a better fighter. I admit that Medel was defeated. Harada showed himself to be a much better fighter than three years ago when Medel defeated him in Tokyo. Harada won without question." -Lupe Sanchez, Medel's manager.
