Joe Louis was born on May 13, 1914 in Lafayette, Alabama. On June 22, 1937 he won the World Heavyweight Title from James J. Braddock. He retired after losing to Rocky Marciano on October 26, 1951. His final record was 63-3. Louis had the longest reign of any heavyweight champion. During his career he defeated Max Schmeling, Primo Carnera, Jack Sharkey, Max Baer, Billy Conn and Jersey Joe Walcott. Offered here is a first day cover comemmorating Joe Louis on June 24, 1993 at the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in Canastota, New York.
