HISTORY: On Septemebr 23, 1948 at Yankee Stadium in New York Sugar Ray Robinson and Kid Gavilan fought in an important bout. Robinson won a unanimous ten round decision. Although most sportswriters agreed that Robinson had won, the fans "disagreed violently with the verdict in Robinson’s favor" and "set up such a roar of disagreement that the introduction of the championship principals was delayed until order was restored." (James P. Dawson, New York Times). In the main event lightweight champion Ike Williams defended his title stopping Jesse Flores in the 10th round. FULL DESCRIPTION: This is an original, cardboard, on site poster which names the fighters, date and venue. Bold color and print. Poster had been tacked up and there is damage in each corner. Has a mild crease in upper left corner. No center crease. Edge and corner wear. Mild surface wear and soiling. 22" x 28."
