HISTORY: On January 12, 1900 at the New Broadway Athletic Club in New York Kid McCoy and Joe Choynski met in the featured bout. McCoy stopped Choynski in the 4th round. "McCoy got a decision over Joe Choysnki in a bout which lasted three rounds at the Broadway Athletic club tonight. Choynski would have had the fight in the second round were it not for an accident as to time keeping. He had floored the Kid four times, but the time keeper pulled the bell as McCoy counted for the limit of ten seconds, and this saved the Kid from absolute defeat. Choysnki's seconds protested vigorously, but Referee Johnny White, while knowing the round was short by several seconds, stood by the official time keeper and ordered the men to continue when the gong rang again for opening of third round. Choynski's cleverness outpointed and outshadowed all McCoy's clever ring work. McCoy having escaped defeat in the second, was again lucky in the third, as the blow with which he sent Choynski down and out was delivered almost two seconds after the bell had rung for the completion of the third round. There was a great deal of noise in the building at the time the gong sounded and undoubtedly neither man heard the clang of the bell. In the northeastern portion of the building there was a tumult caused by one spectator dropping dead. The man was very much excited during the bout and expressed himself freely as to McCoy's being out before the bell rang. He slid from his seat dead as the bell sounded for the beginning of the third round. Colonel Mike Padden said, afterward, that the round was clipped by forty seconds; that McCoy was groggy and practically out whehn the bell rang. Choynski, while feeling rather sore, said he had no fault to find with the referee and in conversation with the latter, exonerated White from all blame. 'I had him licked good and sure,' said Choynski, 'and had the time keeper acted right, I would have had McCoy out. However, I am satisfied nothing was done by either referee or official timekeeper with intent of doing me wrong.' After the bout Choynski and McCoy signed articles to meet again under the same conditions, the bout to take place at the Broadway Athletic club February 20th." Durango Democrat (Durango, CO, USA).
