History: On February 27, 1948 at Madison Square Garden in New York future world welterweight champion Kid Gavilan fought Ike Williams in the main event. Williams won a unanimous ten round decision. The crowd booed the decision. The New York Times and the Daily News both scored the fight for Gavilan (2-1 to 8-5 underdog). AP scored the rounds even, with the edge to Williams on the strength of the knockdown. Gavilan was down from a right hand for an 8-count at the end of the 8th round. Many sources reported this as the first knockdown of Gavilan's career. Offered here is an original wire photo depicting 3rd round action in the fight.
