History: "Uncle" Bill Tovee was an English bare knuckle fighter who emigrated to America. Tovee after retiring opened a gym on Clove Road in building and taught boxing. Jack Skelly wrote that Tovee was also the first boxing announcer. He also occasionally acted as a referee. Tovee passed away in 1883. Offered here is an original, first generation photograph of "Uncle" Bill Tovee.
