History: On October 20, 1979 "Big" John Tate won the vacant WBA Heavyweight Title defeating Gerrie Coetzee in Pretoria, South Africa. In his next fight and first defense he completely dominated Mike Weaver until the last round. Tate was caught with a big punch from Weaver and looked unconscious standing. He was counted out and lost the title to Weaver on March 31, 1980. He suffered from a serious drug addiction and passed away a few years ago. Presented here is an original, first generation photograph of John Tate as he looked at the beginning of his boxing career.
