Dick Burge was born in Cheltenham in 1865. He reigned as British Lightweight Champion from 1891 to 1897. After he retired in 1900 he became a promoter of boxing at the Blackfriars Ring in South London. At one point, he was sentenced to ten years in prison for his part of the $850,000 Bank of Liverpool forgeries, and released late April 1907. Burge died in London, March 15, 1918, of pneumonia, while serving as a soldier with the First Surrey Rifles. Offered here is a rare cabinet card of Dick Burge in fight pose as he appeared at the height of his career.
This is a circa 1890's cabinet card by noted photographer John Wood with his stamp at lower left. Image is bold. Name written at lower mount. Not creased. Has edge wear with slight loss at left edge to mount and on the reverse. Surface wear on photo. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2."
