Joe McAULIFFE. Joseph Peter McAuliffe was born in San Francisco in 1864. He was a good sized heavyweight at 6'3" and 210lbs in condition. He was managed by the famous Billy Madden for awhile. The photo dates to c. 1890 when he was in New York. At the start of his career he was a big star in S.F. He beat name opponents out there including Mike Brennan, Paddy Ryan, Frank Glover and Mike Conley. After that he was beaten by Peter Jackson at S.F. He then beat Tom Lees and Pat Killen there before going to London in 1890 where he was beaten easily by Frank Slavin. He cut off his mustache after this defeat and said that he would not grow it back until he had beaten Sullivan, Jackson or Corbett.
