HISTORY: Sugar Ray Robinson (Walker Smith, Jr.) became a professional fighter on October 4, 1940. He defeated Tommy Bell on December 20, 1946 to win the World Welterweight Title. He defeated Jake LaMotta on February 14, 1951 to win the World Middleweight Title. He would eventually win that title on four additional occasions. In a career which ran until 1965 he would claim victories over Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, Kid Gavilan, Bobo Olson, Rocky Graziano, Henry Armstrong and Randy Turpin.

FULL DESCRIPTION: This is an original, first generation photograph of Sugar Ray Robinson which dates to the second year of his professional career. Robinson is pictured in full fight pose. The photograph is stamped on the back by The Cleveland News in two places and has an original date stamp of November 25, 1942. This was 6 days before Robinson's fight against Izzy Jannazzo at the Arena in Cleveland. Stamped on the reverse as a photo engraving which likely refers to this photograph being used for newspapers and magazines. Bold, clear image. Minor corner creases. Not torn. 8" x 10."
