HISTORY: The historic match between Bruno Sammartino and Pedro Morales on September 30, 1972, at Shea Stadium in Queens, NY, ended in a curfew draw after more than 75 minutes of wrestling. This encounter, headlined as "The Match of the Century," was the main event of the inaugural Showdown at Shea.

Match Highlights and Context
The Stakes: Pedro Morales entered as the reigning WWWF Heavyweight Champion, while Bruno Sammartino was the former long-reigning titleholder.

The Finish: After a back-and-forth battle that lasted approximately 75 minutes, the match was ruled a draw because of a strict city curfew at the stadium.

Rare Pairing: It was highly unusual for the era to book two top "babyfaces" (heroes) against one another. Despite the intense battle, the two men embraced afterward to show mutual respect.

The Setup: The rivalry was sparked during a televised tag team match where both men were blinded by salt thrown by opponents Professor Tanaka and Mr. Fuji, leading them to accidentally attack each other.
