HISTORY: Ralph Branca and Bobby Thomson are linked forever by one of the most famous moments in baseball history: the "Shot Heard 'Round the World."
• The Event: On October 3, 1951, in the decisive third game of the National League tie-breaker series at the Polo Grounds, the Brooklyn Dodgers led the New York Giants 4–1 in the bottom of the ninth inning. With runners on second and third, Dodgers manager Chuck Dressen brought in relief pitcher Ralph Branca to face Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson.
• The Home Run: Thomson hit Branca's second pitch for a walk-off, three-run home run into the left-field stands, winning the game 5–4 and capturing the National League pennant for the Giants.
• Aftermath & Sign-Stealing: Years later, it was revealed that the 1951 Giants used an elaborate center-field telescope and buzzer system to steal catcher signs during their late-season surge.
• Friendship: Despite the heartbreak, Branca and Thomson later reconciled, became close friends, and made joint appearances on the autograph and golf circuit for decades. Thomson died in 2010, and Branca passed away in 2016 at age 90.
