HISTORY: Herbert A. Slade (The Maori) began his professional boxing career on August 26, 1882 against Jem Mace. Slade fought as a heavyweight and met Mace 16 times. He also fought Charley Mitchell, Denver Ed Smith and Joe Coburn. The highlight of his career was his fight with John L. Sullivan at Madison Square Garden on August 6, 1883. Slade was stopped in the 3rd round. He retired after losing to Charles Lange on August 11, 1981 in Salt Lake City. Offered here is an original cabinet card of Herbert A. Slade, taken by Bradley & Rulofson of San Francisco. Dates to mid 1880's.

Mid1880's by Bradley & Rulofson of San Francisco with their information on bottom front and on reverse. Labeled on back. Bold, clear image. Clean front and back. Corners rounded. Minor toming to mount. Image is pristine. Not creased or torn. No tack holes. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2." The first cabinet card of Slade we have seen.
