On January 25, 1976 heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali while preparing for his title fight with Jean Pierre Coopman the following month was presented with a spiritual award from Indian poet, athlete and spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy. Offered here is that award given to Muhammad Ali. From the collection of Ali's long time assistant trainer Wali Muhammad. Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, also known as Sri Chinmoy (August 27, 1931 – October 11, 2007) was an Indian spiritual teacher, poet, artist and athlete who immigrated to the U.S. in 1964., the founder of the religious organization "Sri Chinmoy Centre Church, Inc." better known as "Sri Chinmoy Centre". According to his followers, Sri Chinmoy wrote 1,500 books, 115,000 poems and 20,000 songs, created 200,000 paintings and gave almost 800 free peace concerts in notable venues around the world. As a spiritual Master, he advocated meditation, chanting mantras and prayers, performing dedicated service to God as a way to personal enlightenment, or God-realisation as described by Eastern religions, including Sri Aurobindo's spiritual teaching.
This is an original, metal on wood, spiritual award which has the signature of Sri Chinmoy at bottom right. It reads, "CHAMPION ALI MUHAMMAD ALI, CHAMPION ALI Greater than the greatest really Sleepless you cry for Allah's grace Deathless you fight for the Muslim race Your moon pure heart and justcie light Shall smash the frown of ignorance night Ali, you are Eternity's pride Your victory's smile is the Pole star guide."
