On December 15, 1964 at Seattle Center Coliseum in Seattle, Washington highly regarded light heavyweights "Irish" Wayne Thornton and Eddie Cotton fought in a main event title elimination bout. Thornton prevailed stopping Cotton in the 9th round. "Irish Wayne Thornton, 25, today is convinced his TKO victory over Eddie Cotton, 38, here last night has earned him a shot at Willie Pastrano's light heavyweight crown. Thornton was awarded the TKO over the veteran Cotton when referee Whitey Domstad stopped the fight at the end of the 9th round because of a severe cut over the Seattle fighter's left eye. It took five stitches to close the gash over the eye which bled profusely several times during the fight after it was first opened in the 2nd round. In the 8th round, ring physician Dr. Lew Richards took a look at the cut but then waved Cotton back into action. But in the 9th, Thornton bulled Cotton around the ring and pecked away at the gash. after the fighters returned to their corners, Domstad took a look at the injury and then raised Thornton's hand in victory." -United Press International. A crowd of 5,816 paid $32,345 to see the fight despite blizzard conditions and freezing temperatures in the Seattle area. Post fight comments-"This was supposed to be it.
