Sam McVea was born on May 17, 1884 in Texas. He began his career on April 12, 1902 with a knockout win over George Sullivan. He fought as a heavyweight during the early 1900's. During his career he fought Sam Langford, Harry Wills, Arthur Pelkey and Joe Jeannette among others. His last fight was a draw with Jeff Clark on August 2, 1921 finishing his career with a record of 65-16-12. McVea died on December 23, 1921 at the age of 37. Offered here is a very rare hand written postcard to his sister sent from France in 1907.
This postcard to his sister recalls his recent activity, "Dear Sister I am enjoying myself and just won two fights one in a minute 1/2 and the other in three rounds. Sam McVea." Written and signed boldly in fountain pen ink. Has glue residue from being mounted in an album which affects some of the text and part of the signature although the ink is clear right through it. Can likely be removed. Crease in upper left corner. Corners are rounded and worn. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2." Extremely rare signature.
