HISTORY: Johnny Murphy was a notable boxer and trainer. Born in the United Kingdom on February 22, 1864 Murphy made his debut as a professional fighter in 1884 as a bantamweight. He fought until 1899 and took on some of the greats in the division including George Dixon, Ike Weir, Torpedo Billy Murphy, Billy Plimmer and Pedlar Palmer. Murphy served as a second to Jake Kilrain in his amous bare knuckle championship fight with John L. Sullivan. Murphy also served as a trainer and teacher of boxing and was known as Professor Johnny Murphy by many. Offered here is an exceedingly rare, original, first generation, panel card photograph of Johnny Murphy in period dress as he looked at the height of his career.

Names Johnny Murphy Boston written at top mount and at lower left on photo. Photographer stamp on back. Not creased or torn. Bold, clear image. Surface scrape at writing on lower left. 6" x 9 3/4." Exceedingly rare.
