Sugar Ray Robinson fought Jake Lamotta on February 14, 1951 in Chicago. Robinson stopped LaMotta in the unlucky 13th round for Jake to win the World Middleweight Championship. This was the 6th and final meeting of the two. LaMotta won once with Robinson taking the rest. This was a hard fought battle, but in the later rounds Sugar Ray's relentless pressure final took its toll and referee Frank Sikora stepped in and ended it with LaMotta stunned and bleeding against the ropes. Presented here is the certifcate award given to Sugar Ray Robinson by the National Boxing Association for his victory over Jake LaMotta. This important award recognized Robinson as the World Middleweight Champion.
This award certificate is paper. It has the seal of the National Boxing Association and is signed by the Executive Secretary. dated February 28, 1951. It states in part, "Know Ye That, Recognizing the Courage, Skill and Ability of SUGAR RAY ROBINSON THE NATIONAL BOXING ASSOCIATION Awards this Certificate emblematic of the MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP of the WORLD to SUGAR RAY ROBINSON In Recognition of His Victory over JAKE LaMOTTA at CHICAGO, ILL. on 14 Feb. 1951." In fine condition. No creases, rips or tears. Very minor soiling from handling. 9 1/2" x 11 1/2." LOA from Millie Robinson (Ray's last wife). Extremely rare and important award from the sanctioning body governing the fight.
