Harry "Champ" Segal (born 1899), who began his career under the ring name Battling Champ, was reputed to be a good club fighter with a stiff punch who went on to manage the boxing careers of Phil 'KO' Kaplan, "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom,Benny Valger, Charley Phil Rosenberg, and many other fighters. He fought from 1916 until 1921 as a lightweight. "Champ" Segal was also a racketeer and an associate of mobsters Frankie Carbo and Bugsy Siegel. He was arrested at various times for murder, fixing fights, and loan sharking. He was convicted in September 1974 of bookmaking. After his appeal was denied, he was sentenced to a jail term. His brother wrote a notable book about Champ Segal, They Called Him Champ: The Story of Champ Segal and His Fabulous Era (Citadel Press: 1959) by Hyman Segal.
