James J. Corbett was born on September 1, 1866 in San Francisco, California. He won the World Heavyweight Title from John L. Sullivan on September 7, 1892. He fought significant fights with Peter Jackson, Charley Mitchell and Robert Fitzsimmons. He retired after losing to Jim Jeffries on August 14, 1903 with a final record of 11-4-2 with 2 no contests and 7 KO's. Offered here is an original large format studio photograph of James J. Corbett taken by noted photographer Elmer Chickering in 1894 which has been signed by Corbett.
This is an original, first generation photograph. Stamp of photographer Chickering in lower right corner. Photograph is matted and framed. In fine condition. No creases or tears. Signed in fountain pen, "Yours truly Jas.J.Corbett Nov 30/94. Photo and signature as champion. The image is bold and sharp. The signature is light. 14" x 17 1/2." Extremely rare in this size.
