William Thomas Wells, better known as, Bombardier Billy Wells (August 31, 1889 – June 12, 1967) was a English heavyweight boxer. Fighting under the name 'Bombardier Billy Wells,' he was British and British Empire Champion from 1911 until 1919, defending his title fourteen times. In 1911 he became the first Heavyweight to win the Lonsdale Belt, which had been introduced for British champions at all weights in 1909. Offered here is an original photograph of "Bombadier" Billy Wells which he has signed and inscribed to boxing manager Billy Gibson (managed Gene Tunney).
This is an original, mounted antique first generation photograph. Boldly signed in fountain pen in the lower right corner, "To Billy Gibson "One of the best" From Bombadier Billy Wells Englands Champion July 22nd 1912 New York." Clear bold image. Photo has a severe crack on the left side outside of signature which is reinforced on the back by tape. Some edge damage on right side leaving photo slightly irregular. 6 3/8" x 8 1/2."
