HISTORY: Billy Backus was born in Canastota, New York on May 5, 1943. He started his professional boxing career with a knockout over Ike Anthony on September 16, 1961. On December 3, 1970 in Syracuse Backus stopped Jose Napoles in the 4th round to win the welterweight title. Napoles won it back from him on June 4, 1971 stopping Backus in the 8th round in California. In his career Billy Backus fought a number of significant welterweights including Ricky Ortiz, Hedgemon Lewis, Rocky Mattioli and Pipino Cuevas. He retired after being stopped by Carlos Maria del Valle Herrara on June 24, 1979. His final ring record is 49-21-5.  Offered here is a commemorative International Boxing Hall Of Fame paperweight which has been signed by Billy Backus.
