HISTORY: On February 12, 1965 at Madison Square Garden in New York Luis Rodriquez met Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in a Middleweight bout. Rodriquez would win the bout by unanimous decision in a 10 round bout. Rodriguez was a 2-1 favorite. Carter was ranked No. 3 at middleweight, and Rodriguez was ranked No. 3 at welterweight. A crowd of 10,806 produced a gate of $44,780. Rodriguez moved and jabbed while Carter chased. Rodriguez outboxed him throughout most of the bout. Carter suffered a cut over his right eye in round three. Carter landed substantial blows in rounds three and five. Carter sent Rodriguez through the ropes with a right-left-right combination in the seventh round. Rodriguez appeared unhurt and rose at the count of eight. Carter later said, "I could see he wasn't hurt." It was the first knockdown of Rodriguez's career. "It had to happen some time," Rodriguez said. The two traded blows for the remainder of the round. After a quiet round eight, Carter staggered Rodriguez in the ninth. "He won the fight," Carter said afterwards. "But there ought to be a law against little men like him having arms that long." Presented here is an original wire photo depicting Carter out for a run while training for this bout on February 10, 1965.
