Joe Choynski was born on November 8, 1868 in San Francisco. He fought as a heavyweight from the 1880's to the early 1900's. During his career he fought Jim Corbett, Jim Hall, and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Tom Sharkey, Kid McCoy, Peter Maher, Robert Fitzsimmons and Jack Johnson who he knocked out early in Johnson's career. He also sparred with Jim Jeffries as he prepared for his fight with Jack Johnson. Offered here is a rare first generation, large format photograph of Joe Choynski taken in approximately 1891 at the height of his career.
This is a first generation photograph mounted on antique board. His name has been added on the mount. The mount has some water stains not affecting the photo. The photo image is very sharp. One small mark on his right bicep and one small nick at top center border. No creases. One tear at upper right border with no photo paper loss. 13" x 16" photo on a mount of 16" x 19." Exceedingly rare in this size.
