On November 22, 1898 at the Lenox Athletic Club in New York former heavyweight champion James J. Corbett fought tough contender Tom Sharkey. Corbett was disqualified in the 9th round. "Corbett had all the worst of the encounter, when one of his seconds, 'Connie' McVey, jumped into the ring, appealing to the referee, thus violating the rules, and the referee, 'Honest' John Kelly, had no alternative but to disqualify Corbett and award the bout to Sharkey." (Summit County Journal) Offered here is an extremely rare, original, large Police Gazette Supplement picturing the two fighters squaring off.
