HISTORY: On September 26, 1972 at Empire Pool, Wembley in London world heavyweight champion Bob Foster fought local favorite Chris Finnegan. Foster faced a stern test from Finnegan, but ultimately knocked him out in the 14th round. "Bob Foster knocked out Chris Finnegan with a smashing left and right to the head in the 14th round of a slugging match for Foster's world light heavyweight championship Tuesday night. Finnegan was more than holding his own with Foster for the first nine rounds and seemed to be taking command. But in the 10th round, Foster struck with a straight right-hand punch to the jaw that knocked Finnegan down for the first time in 27 pro fights. Finnegan jumped to his feet, took a mandatory eight count and moved to the attack. The Englishman hurt Foster with a right to the jaw in the 12th, but the champion boxed his way out of trouble and took the 13th when he repeatedly landed with right-hand counters. Then in the 14th, with Finnegan looking the fresher of the two, Foster suddenly ended it with a left-right combination to the head." -Associated Press. The bout was named Fight Of The Year by Ring Magazine. On the undercard future champion John Conteh lost his first professional fight by ten round decision to Ed Duncan.
