Joe Goss was born in Northampton, England on November 16, 1837. On November 25, 1862 he defeated Posh Price in 66 rounds to win the Middleweight Championship Of England. He fought Tom Allen four times. In their fourth and final bout he was awarded the victory by disqualification in the 14th round when Allen struck him while down to win the American Heavyweight Title. On May 30, 1880 he lost the title to Paddy Ryan in a fight which went 87 rounds. This was his last fight. He died on March 24, 1885. Presented here is a very rare lithographic poster of Joe Goss.
This magnificent poster is circa 1860's around the time he held the Middleweight Championship of England. This is on heavy stock and measures 17 1/4" x 22 1/4." The poster is in fine condition. There are no creases, rips or tears. Exceptionally clean. One very small light circular stain outside the image. Some general light foxing to the background uniformly distributed from age. Incredibly rare, the only example we have seen. Very few items like this survived the bareknuckle days of boxing.
