HOLMES, LARRY-LEROY JONES & ALEXIS ARGUELLO-GERALD HAYS ON SITE POSTER (1980)

HISTORY: On March 31, 1980 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes fought LeRoy Jones in the main event with his title on the line. Holmes dominated and stopped Jones in the 8th round. Holmes was a 12 to 1 favorite. Holmes got $1.3 million, while Jones made $150,000. Holmes dominated the fight and had both of Jones' eyes badly swollen. Holmes was battering Jones in the challenger's corner when the referee stopped the fight. Once again Holmes was accused of using the "Thumb in the eye" punch. On the undercard lightweight Alexis Arguello won a 10 round decision over Gerald Hays.
