HISTORY: Peter Jackson was born on July 3, 1861 in St. Croix, West Indes. He began fighting professionally in 1883. In his first year he stopped Mike Dooley and Joe Goddard. In 1888 he defeated George Godfrey and stopped Joe McAuliffe. Although certainly a highly qualified challenger for World Heavyweight Champion John L. Sullivan's Title, Sullivan refused to fight him noting he would not fight a black man. Jackson fought a classic battle with future champion James J. Corbett on May 21, 1891 in San Francisco which ended in a 61 round draw. Near the end of his career he was stopped by future champion James J. Jeffries in three rounds in San Francisco on March 22, 1898. In poor health for some time Jackson died on July 13, 1901 in Australia just after his fortieth birthday.
