LAMOTTA, JAKE ORIGINAL WIRE PHOTO (1949)

Regular price $185.00

HISTORY: On June 16, 1949, following a one day delay, at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, middleweight champion Marcel Cerdan defended his title against tough Jake LaMotta. LaMotta stopped Cerdan in the 10th round to win the coveted crown after waiting many years to get a shot at it. LaMotta won the first round, but Cerdan took the second and the third was even. After that it was plain that something was wrong with Cerdan, who had suffered a left shoulder separation when he fell to the canvas from a shove in the first round. LaMotta damaged his left hand in the fifth round, but even in the ninth round he landed 104 blows, whereas Cerdan was scarcely throwing a punch. Cerdan's manager, Jo Longman, stopped the fight at the beginning of the tenth round. Offered here is an original wire photo of Jake LaMotta holding his championship belt while celebrating with his friends and family two days after his victory over Cerdan.
