Joe Louis fought Tommy Farr on August 30, 1937 at Yankee Stadium. Louis won by decision in the 15th round to successfully defend his heavyweight title. This was the first defense of the title Louis won from Jimmy Braddock. Presented here is original cartoon art of the Louis-Farr fight by noted cartoonist Willard Mullin. Willard Mullin (September 14, 1902 - December 20, 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is most famous for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", the personification of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. He received the Reuben Award for 1954 for his work, as well as the National Cartoonist Society Sports Cartoon Award for each year from 1957 through 1962, and again in 1964 and 1965.
Original cartoon art by Willard Mullin. Signed by the artist. Pictures Louis at center flanked by different opponents. The conclusion was any opponent of Louis had a chance TO WIN OR BE MASSACRED. A few small stains out side of the drawings or text. No creasing, rips or tears. Bold images and text. 16 1/2" x 18."
