Peter Maher (born March 16, 1869, in Gunnode, Tuam, County Galway, Ireland – July 22, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland) was an Irish-American boxer known for his powerful punch. His first professional fight was a win over C.Arthur on March 18, 1887. Early in his career Maher won the 1888 Middleweight Championship of Ireland, and the 1890 Heavyweight Championship of Ireland. After moving to the United States he won the 1895 Heavyweight Championship of the World match by knocking out Steve O'Donnell in the first round. In 1896 he fought a significant fight with future heavyweight champion Robert Fitzsimmons losing by first round knockout in Langtry, Texas. During his career he also fought Tom Sharkey, Joe Choynski, Jack Bonner, Joe Butler and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien. Offered here is an extremely rare poster advertising an appearance of Peter Maher and his trainer at the Hyde & Behman Theatre in New York on December 30, 1895.

The poster has several small pieces missing on the border which does not affect the text. The colored print remains bold on somewhat fragile paper. Edge and corner wear. Several mild creases.
