Holley (Holly) Mims (February 10, 1929—January 13, 1970) was a highly-regarded middleweight during the 1950s and 60s. His overall record 66-28-6 (13 KOs) meant that he spent much of his career ranked among the top ten middleweights. His first fight was on June 1, 1948, a draw with Angelo Marini. Mims fought and defeated some of the best middleweights at the time including Johnny Bratton, Jose Basors, Gomeo Brennan, George Bento and Henry Hank. He lost by decision to Sugar Ray Robinson. Among his notable fights was a loss to Rubin Carter in 1962, a fight that he took on one day's notice (he had, in fact, flown in to New York on the same day of the fight). Mims dropped Carter in round four. As a result of the loss, he dropped out of Ring Magazine's list of the top 10 middleweights contenders. His last fight was a win over George Johnson on July 6, 1967. Mims died of a kidney ailment at the age of 42 on January 13, 1970. Offered here is a rare signed photo of Holly Mims to trainer Buddy Ey.
