ROBINSON, SUGAR RAY & GEORGE GAINSFORD ORIGINAL WIRE PHOTO (1949-TRAINING FOR GAVILAN)

On July 11, 1949 at Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson defended his title against capable Kid Gavilan of Cuba. Robinson won a 15 round unanimous decision. "The contest was a most interesting and satisfying one. Gavilan's performance was such as to make Ray admit that he feared to take chances. In the fourth round Sugar Ray suffered a cut over the right eye that bled throughout the bout..For the first six rounds it was anybody's fight..But after the sixth, there was not doubt about Ray (having the better of it)."
