On November 18, 1932 at Madison Square Garden in New York heavyweight giants Primo Carnera of Italy, and future heavyweight champion, and Jose Santa of Portugal squared off in the main event. carnera won by TKO in round six. Santa was down in the 2nd, 3rd and 6th, when the referee stopped it. "Needless to say Santa was relieved. He had been battered and hammered around the ring rather generously from the beginning, and judging by his expression, was rather tired of it" (New York Times). Offered here is an original wire photo depicting Joe Santa striking a fight pose before the fight with Primo Carnera.
