Max Schmeling was born on September 28, 1905 in Klein Luckaw, Brandenburg, Germany. He won the World Heavyweight Title on June 12, 1930 in a bout with Jack Sharkey. He also held the German Light Heavyweight, European Light Heavyweight and German Heavyweight Titles. He retired after losing to Richard Vogt on October 31, 1948 with a final record of 56-10-4 with 38 KO's. Presented here is an original wire photo of Max Schmeling shaking hands with then New York Governor Franklin Roosevelt at Schmeling's training camp in Kingston, New York as he prepared for Jack Sharkey.
