Dave Smith (1886-1945) was an important middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight fighter during the early part of the 20th century. Smith was actuallu born in Dunedin, New Zealand, but did most of his fighting in Australia. He turned professional on January 26, 1909 with a win over Eddie Straight Rollins. In his career he won the Australian middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight titles. He fought numerous important fighters in his career including Billy Papke, Leo Houck, Cyclone Johnny Thompson, Battling Levinsky, Eddie McGoorty, Jimmy Clabby and Bill Lang. He retired after being knocked out by Jimmy Clabby on May 26, 1917. His final record was 38-12-3. Smith passed away on May 29, 1945. Offered here is a rare signed photo of Dave Smith.
This is an original, first generation, mounted photo of Smith at the height of his career in full fight pose. Boldly signed in fountain pen ink, "Yours to a T Dave Smith 4-11-10." Pictured as light heavyweight champion of Australia. Bold,clear image. Photo is clean. Mount has some edge and corner wear and some minor soiling. Not creased. 6" x 8" photo on mount of 9 3/4" x 12."
