Bill Squires was born on June 25, 1879 in Narrabri, New South Wales, Australia. He fought as a heavyweight and started his career with a knockout win over Bill Costello on April 3, 1902. In 1907 and 1908 Squires challenged heavyweight champion Tommy Burns on three different occasions, but was stopped each time. Other notable fights in his career included Bill Lang (4 times), Jack "Twin" Sullivan, "Fireman" Jim Flynn and Jem Roche. He retired after being stopped by Dave Smith on December 26, 1916 with a final record of 20-11. Presented here is a very rare original, large format photograph of Bill Squires taken by Dana Photography of San Francisco.
This is an original, first generation photograph of Bill Squires in full fight pose. Slightly tinted. Has the Dana stamp and his name stamped. The image is clear and sharp. No creases or tears. Minor soiling on top left border. A truly beautiful photograph. Extremely rare in this size and quite likely unique. 17 1/2" x 29 3/4."
