HISTORY: On November 19, 2016 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas WBO and IBF World Light Heavyweight Champion and WBA World Super Light Heavyweight Champion Sergey Kovalev defended his ttiles against Andre Ward. Ward won a controversial 12 round unanimous decision. Sergey Kovalev scored a flash knockdown of Ward onto all fours in round 2 with a short punch as both combatants battled on the inside.All three judges scored the bout 114-113 for Andre Ward, who lost the first few rounds, and then gradually fought his way back into the bout. First loss for Kovalev in 32 pro bouts, who complained after the bout of hometown favouritism for Ward from the three American judges.
Ward won the bout by winning the final round on the scorecards. Ward told commentator Max Kellerman after the bout he is open to a rematch with Kovalev, whenever Kovalev wants to fight him again. HBO commentator Harold Lederman scored the bout 116-111 for Kovalev, and did not feel the bout was close. Max Kellerman disagreed. Kovalev landed 126 total punches, Ward landed 116 punches. Kovalev dominated round 2 (16 punches landed, Ward only landed 3 punches in this round). This bout was very close. Kovalev received a minimum purse of $2 million and stood to earn a percentage of the profits from his promoter, Main Events. Ward's purse was a career-high $5 million. The fight generated a live gate of $3,341,980 from the sale of 10,066 tickets (with 1,636 complimentary tickets given away and 2,525 unsold tickets), 165,000 pay-per-view buys and $10,7 million in PPV revenue.
