WILLARD, JESS TRAINING CAMP REAL PHOTO POSTCARD (1915-TRAINING FOR JOHNSON)

JO Sports Inc.

Regular price $235.00

HISTORY: On April 5, 1915 in Havana, Cuba World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson fought Jess Willard. Under a grueling sun the two fought for 26 rounds when suddenly the giant Jess Willard stopped the aging Johnson with a hard straight right hand. Johnson later claimed to have thrown the fight, but most ring historians dismiss this claim. The fight was of great note. Offered here is an original real photo postcard which pictures Jess Willard and his camp members while he was training for his fight with Jack Johnson. The man on the left is Walter Monahan, a former heavyweight from San Francisco who worked as Willard's sparring partner for a few years. The man between Monahan and Willard is heavyweight Jim Savage. Both of these men did work with Willard prior to the Johnson fight.
