HISTORY: George Gardner was born on March 17, 1877 in Lisdoonvarna, County Clare, Ireland. He began his professional career in 1898. He won the World Light Heavyweight Title on July 4, 1903 stopping Champion Jack Root in 12 rounds. He lost the title to Robert Fitzsimmons on November 25, 1903 in a tough 20 round decision in San Francisco. He posted a career mark of 40-13-10 with two no contests. In addition to Jack Root he had victories over Peter Maher, Kid Carter, Marvin Hart and Frank Craig. Presented here is an original, first generation, boudoir cabinet photo of George Gardner by the noted photographer Elmer Chickering.

Clipped upper left corner not affecting the photo itself. Photo has some staining adjacent to image. Minor corner wear. Not creased. 3 3/4" x 5 1/4" photo on mount of 5 1/4" x 7 1/4." Rare image.
