Joe Goss was born in Northampton, England on November 16, 1837. On November 25, 1862 he defeated Posh Price in 66 rounds to win the Middleweight Championship Of England. He fought Tom Allen four times. In their fourth and final bout he was awarded the victory by disqualification in the 14th round when Allen struck him while down to win the American Heavyweight Title. On May 30, 1880 he lost the title to Paddy Ryan in a fight which went 87 rounds. This was his last fight. He died on March 24, 1885. Presented here is a very rare cabinet card of Joe Goss.
This is an original cabinet card of Goss in fight pose. Stamped on the reverse by Ed James. Clear image. Tack holes at top and bottom center. Not creased. Very minor spotting. Minor edge, surface and corner wear. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2."
