On September 25, 1971 at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina world middleweight champion Carlos Monzon defended his title against former champion Emile Griffith. Monzon prevailed stopping Griffith in the 14th round. "Carlos Monzon, 29, cool and cautious for most of the fight, unleashed a savage flurry of punches in the 14th round to stop Emile Griffith and retain his world middleweight championship. The end came at 2:46 of the round with Griffith crouched helplessly in his corner as a sellout crowd of 23,000 went wild in Luna Park. Griffith, the 33 year old New Yorker, simply was outclassed by the younger, taller Argentine. For most of the fight Monzon was content to stab Griffith with crisp jabs mixed with occasional right hands as Griffith moved forward trying to land a damaging punch. There was little doubt that Griffith was badly hurt when Mexican referee Ramon Berumen stopped the bout. Griffith was hunched over with his arms dangling at his sides and Monzon pounding away at will." -Associated Press. There is a disparity in the wire reports of the AP and UPI on two points of this bout. The AP report states there was 23,000 in attendance and the fight was stopped at 2:46 of the 14th round. Conversely, the UPI report states there was 19,000 at Luna Park and the fight was stopped at 2:32 of the same round. Post fight comment-"I was going good until the 14th round. Then he got me cornered and got in some good punches. His arms are too long for me to get into his body, but I did get in some good blows. I wasn't tired when the fight was stopped." -Emile Griffith.
